Chelsea looking to complete January deal quickly amid threat of Real Madrid hijack - journalist

Chelsea are not expected to be busy in the January transfer window, but there could still be some activity.

Second-choice goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen could leave Stamford Bridge in search of more game time.

Last week, it was reported that Chelsea are set to receive offers for Jorgensen when the transfer market opens.

SCENARIO: You are one of Chelsea’s sporting directors and Todd Boehly has given you £60m to spend in January. Who are you signing?

Your potential shortlist could include:

Kobbie Mainoo

Mike Maignan

Marc Guehi

While exits are more likely than arrivals, the Blues could still make a signing or two.

Chelsea want to sign Kees Smit quickly

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the Club World Cup winners are interested in signing AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit in January.

According to Phillips, Real Madrid are another club who are keen on the 19-year-old, so Chelsea are trying to act quickly.

On paper, Chelsea are not short of options in midfield. Enzo Maresca can call upon Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia, Andrey Santos and Dario Essugo.

Romeo Lavia’s injury record could force Chelsea to sign a new midfielder in 2026. Who would you buy if Kobbie Mainoo isn’t available?

However, Lavia and Essugo have both picked up bad injuries this season, resulting in Reece James having to play in the engine room.

Going forward, Chelsea do not want James to be a long-term solution, explaining their interest in Smit.

Kees Smit’s stats this season

AZ manager Maarten Martens will be pleased with how Smit’s campaign is going.

Smit is not 20 yet, but he has still managed to make 15 starts in the Eredivisie this term. The Dutch youngster has also been able to chip in with a couple of goals.

In total, Smit has already made 27 appearances in all competitions, showing how much Martens trusts him.

As per WhoScored, Smit makes 1.7 key passes per league game and has an average pass success rate of 89.2%. It is clear to see that the Netherlands Under-21 international is quite capable on the ball.

A move to Chelsea is risky. When everyone is fit, he may not get much of a look-in. But from Chelsea’s point of view, you can see why they would want this deal to happen.
