Karl-Anthony Towns weighs in on All-Star format change with one wish

Karl-Anthony Towns shared his preference for the World Team under the NBA’s new All-Star format, if he earns a selection. With the league dividing All-Stars into U.S. and international teams, Towns falls into a gray area due to his ties to the Dominican Republic.

Karl-Anthony Towns is keeping an eye on the new NBA All-Star format and already has a preference if he earns a spot in Los Angeles.

New York Knicks / Schedule

New York Knicks big man said he would like to be part of the World Team if he gets selected. “One, I hope I make it,” Towns said per the New York Post. “And two, I hope I’m on the World Team.”

NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently introduced a new All-Star setup. The league plans to split the 24 All-Stars into three teams for a short tournament.

Two teams will feature players from the United States, while the third will be made up of international players. Games will be shorter and played in a round robin format.

Towns falls into a unique category. He was born and raised in the United States but has represented the Dominican Republic in international play, including the Olympics. His mother is from the Dominican Republic, which gives him strong ties to the World side.

At 30 years old, Towns is a five-time All-Star and remains a strong candidate to be selected again in February.

Several international stars are already expected to headline the World Team, including Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokic. That would leave four remaining spots open after the voting results are finalized.
