Will Bournemouth go ten games without a win at Chelsea?

Written by BillyTheKid

Last AFCB Win Away Against Chelsea Was in the 2019-20 Season

After drawing their last three games in the Premier League, the Cherries lost their away game against Brentford. AFCB are away again in London for their next game, this time they visit Stamford Bridge on Tuesday at 7.30 pm to play Chelsea. This game is also being shown live on Sky.

It’s only 24 days since our two sides met at Dean Court in a 0-0 draw. Enzo Maresca is the sixth manager since Frank Lampard, who was in charge the last time we won at their ground. It was also the last season of Eddie Howe being our manager, as at the end of that season our club were relegated.

In their three games played since our game at Dean Court, at home, Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 and then drew 2-2 up in the North East against Newcastle United. In their most recent home game at Stamford Bridge, they lost 1-2 against Aston Villa.

The last time the Cherries beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was in December of the 2019-20 season. It was an 84th-minute goal scored by Dan Gosling, it was an overhead kick which went over the head of Kepa (who was on loan to AFCB last season). The goal was disallowed for offside, but VAR allowed the goal to stand.

Our last visit to Stamford Bridge was in January, and it was looking like the fourth away win for the Cherries at the Chelsea ground, but an injury-time equaliser by Reece James put paid to that. Cole Palmer put Chelsea in front early in the game, and it was the only goal at halftime. A Justin Kluivert penalty five minutes into the second half, and then Antoine Semenyo put the Cherries into the lead, but that late Chelsea goal made it 2-2, and the first draw by the Cherries at the Bridge.

AFCB league visits to Stamford Bridge, AFCB have W 4, D 1, L 4.

In all competitions, AFCB have W 5, D 4, L 14.

Chelsea Team News

Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo have been out injured.

Chelsea Player To Watch

Moises Caicedo missed the game at Dean Court due to suspension. He has been a very important player in midfield and is a strong all-around player. Reece James, their captain, has also had good games for his team recently.

AFCB Team News

Alex Scott was substituted against Brentford because of an injury.

AFCB Player To Watch

Antoine Semenyo was on the scoresheet for his third game in a row at Brentford. In 17 starts, he has scored 9 goals and has 3 assists. After this game and before our next game, the January transfer window opens. Let’s hope he is still our player for the Arsenal home game.

The Referee

Sam Barrott is the man in the middle for this game. He took our home game with Nottingham Forest in October.

I’ve looked at the last 4 league games for Chelsea. They had two home games (Everton and A Villa) and two away games (AFCB and Newcastle). Chelsea have gained 5 points, which feels about right. The xG value for goals scored is 6.48, compared with 5 actual goals; Chelsea has conceded 4 goals, with xGc estimating 5.95 goals, so there is no real over- or under-performance.

Goals Xg.jpg

Chelsea have had 4 different goal scorers (Pedro has 2 goals). Five players have 1 assist each.

The average positions of the starting line-ups are below. There appears to be no clear pattern in the last home game; Chelsea dominated territory against A Villa and had Garnacho playing very high.

The following plot compares the summary stats of Chelsea and AFCB over the last 4 games.

AFCB have the better attacking statistics, with more attempts, more big chances, a higher xG and have scored more. Defensively, it is more in Chelsea’s favour, as AFCB have conceded more goal attempts, have a worse xGc, and have conceded many more goals. However, Chelsea has conceded a large number of big chances.

Chelsea has had more possession and has a better pass completion percentage. Neither side creates a high proportion of chances from set pieces, nor concede a high proportion.

We’re trying square pegs in round holes at the moment. Anything to stop this rot that AI finds himself in, and that makes things more difficult. Asking players to play out of position. Injuries haven’t been kind, and it’s showing the limited strength in depth that we have. I’m not sure AI knows who his best 11 is at the moment, which creates uncertainty in the squad. This is probably Semenyo’s last game for u, so not expecting him to ‘ get stuck in ‘ so to speak for fear of injury. Confidence in the back 4 is low, and Petrovic doesn’t instil too much confidence either. I expect us to make it difficult for Chelsea, but ultimately create enough cock ups that Chelsea win. – To join the conversation, please click here.
