Espanyol supporters’ club urges ‘cool heads’ ahead of heated Catalan derby vs Barcelona

Barcelona will kickstart their 2025 in the most explosive way possible as they take on Espanyol, in what is expected to be a heated Catalan derby at the RCDE Stadium.

Much of the controversy and animosity will revolve around Joan Garcia. The goalkeeper’s controversial move from Espanyol to Barcelona last summer did not sit well with the home supporters.

Garcia’s murals were destroyed and the player even received threats. With this game marking the first time he returns to the RCDE Stadium, a hostile environment is expected.

However, as reported by SPORT, the Catalan Federation of RCD Espanyol Supporters’ Clubs has issued a public statement, urging Espanyol fans to keep a cool head and not do anything that might create controversy.

The president of the organisation, Silvia Rodriguez, spoke to Cadena SER, stating, “The message is to keep a cool head.”

“Many external factors are scrutinising us and eager to attack the club. We can’t forget that the stadium is under threat of closure, and we have to be aware of what’s at stake for us as fans,” she added.

Rodriguez explained that it is important to avoid any actions that might lead to a sporting sanction, especially in a season where Espanyol have been doing so well.

“The fans are angry and hurt by how his departure happened, and that’s understandable, but we mustn’t fall into that trap,” she explained. “It’s good that he knows the fans are hurt, but the team comes first.”

Explaining what led to the supporters’ group putting out a statement, Silvia clarified that the request did not come directly from Espanyol, even though the Catalan club have arranged nets to make sure Joan Garcia remains safe.

“This statement was made before Christmas. Some supporters’ groups asked us to do something in anticipation of the derby. We let the holidays pass and felt this week was the right time,” she revealed.

She went on to highlight Espanyol’s brilliant season and how that must not be tarnished, with the Catalans currently fifth in the league table.

” The first team is giving us something to enjoy like few other times. The players themselves acknowledge that they feel strong at home thanks to the fans.

“That’s why we ask that during the 90 minutes we behave in a way that doesn’t jeopardise the rest of the season,” she said.

“It can be hostile or indifferent, but always with a cool head. Everyone is free to receive him as they wish, but we must think about the future, which goes beyond Saturday,” she concluded.
