Liverpool are preparing to bid for a new centre-back in January - despite having their sights set on Marc Guehi.
With Liverpool’s own centre-back Ibrahima Konate heavily favoured to be joining Real Madrid at the end of the season, it seemed Guehi would simply slot into his position in the Reds’ starting XI. But that may no longer be the case.

According to Spanish publication Fichajes, Liverpool are looking at a January move for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni.
The 26-year-old Italian was a key part of the side that reached the Champions League final last season, having first joined the club in 2017. To date, he has made more than 275 appearances for Inter, including 20 this season.
His reputation certainly preceds him - Bastoni is highly-regarded for his no-nonsense defending style, similar to players like Virgil van Dijk and Gabriel in that he typically wins both one-on-one and aerial duels, and you will rarely ever see him make a mistake.
Should the rumoured £83m bid be accepted, Bastoni would be the most expensive defensive signing in Premier League history, eclipsing the £80m Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire.
If he were to sign, question marks would then hang over Guehi’s role at Anfield. Should Bastoni serve as van Dijk’s heir, he and Guehi could form a formidable defensive parntership for the next decade. But if Bastoni slots in for Konate, Guehi’s position at his rumoured new club would immediately be under threat.
