Why Warriors have slowed their pursuit of Anthony Davis

The Warriors have slowed their pursuit of Anthony Davis due to the lack of a realistic trade package without sacrificing core players (Jimmy Butler or Draymond Green), concerns over his expensive long-term contract, and his ongoing injury history.

The Golden State Warriors have long held admiration for 10-time NBA All-Star Anthony Davis and have internally discussed the possibility of pursuing him.

However, with roughly six weeks remaining until the Feb. 5 trade deadline, Golden State does not appear to be actively pushing for a deal, according to Marc Stein.

One major obstacle is the lack of a realistic trade pathway. To acquire Davis, the Warriors would almost certainly need to part with either Jimmy Butler or longtime franchise cornerstone Draymond Green.

Stein also notes that Davis' contract situation has given the Warriors pause.

The 32-year-old could still have two years remaining on his deal if he exercises his $62.7 million player option for the 2027–28 season.

Combined with the injury issues he has faced since joining the Dallas Mavericks, those factors have slowed Golden State's momentum.

In 16 games this season, AD is averaging 20.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks.

He is currently sidelined with a mild right groin strain. Aside from playing 76 games with the Lakers in 2023–24, Davis has not reached the 62-game mark in a season since 2018–19.

Despite the concerns, Davis continues to generate trade buzz around the league. According to Chris Haynes, the Atlanta Hawks "remain very intrigued" by the possibility of acquiring him.
