Liverpool are said to be leading the race for Marc Guehi as opposition clubs drop out

Liverpool have been handed another boost in their mission to finally sign Marc Guehi, as the heavily in-demand player is now slowly seeing his options deplete.

The centre-back is due to leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season and he will be free to sign for whoever he wants. Liverpool remain eager to bring Guehi to Anfield, having narrowly missed out signing him over the summer.

The Reds had all but wrapped up a deal for the England international, with a £35 million fee accepted by Palace. Personal terms were also agreed between club and player, but the Eagles pulled the plug in the final hours of Deadline Day, having failed to sign a replacement.

The Guehi transfer saga has been one of most talked about topics of the season and it still remains to be seen who he will sign for in 2026. However, Liverpool are said to be in pole position to get a deal over the line, and another rival party is close to pulling out of the race.

Barcelona are another club who have been monitoring Guehi’s situation, but according to Sky Sports reporter Sacha Tavolieri, they are now ‘close to ruling out’ a move for the centre-back.

“The English defender wants to decide his future soon, and Barca’s offer would be lower than those from English clubs. Liverpool still leading the race for Guehi,” Tavolieri wrote on social media.

In a surprising update, Madrid have also removed themselves from other centre-backs due to become free agents in 2026. They are not expected to make an approach for Ibrahima Konate or Dayot Upamecano, who have both been on their radar this season.

Will Liverpool sign Marc Guehi?

According to Kaveh Solhekol, the Reds could have an unofficial agreement in place with the England international.

“We know they're definitely going to sign a new centre-back in 2026. Now, could it be Marc Guehi? I've heard talk that he may have a gentleman's agreement with Liverpool, that he will sign for Liverpool. Of course, he almost signed for them until the deal collapsed on deadline day in the summer,” Solhekol said.

“I think it would make sense for everyone if he leaves in the summer. I think he would get a better deal and also I think it would be better for Crystal Palace to hold on to him because they've still got a lot to play for this season.”
