Liverpool are one of several clubs interested in signing Marc Guehi and news has emerged of when he might be on the move.

Arne Slot is adamant that Liverpool don’t need another centre-half this season, putting his faith in the players he has at his disposal instead.

The Reds boss has even backed midfielders like Ryan Gravenberch or Wataro Endo to step in if they are needed with Andy Robertson also being seen out of position this season too. When the transfer window closed it looked like Slot had enough options only for Giovanni Leoni to suffer a season-ending injury and Joe Gomez to struggle with his fitness too. Failing to sign Marc Guehi on deadline day has proven costly in more than one way.

Liverpool boost in Marc Guehi hunt

Having looked certain to be playing at Anfield, Guehi has skippered Crystal Palace to good effect this season and has seen his name linked with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. There is a long list of alternatives to Guehi with the summer seeing several top class centre-halves available on free transfers. Liverpool have always had the advantage in the race for Guehi with Sky Sports’ Sacha Tovolieri reporting that one team could soon be out of the bidding: “FC Barcelona close to ruling out Marc Guehi!

“The English defender wants to decide his future soon, and Barca’s offer would be lower than those from English clubs. Liverpool still leading the race for Guehi. Wait and see.” It is a similar story with Bayern Munich, who are confident that Liverpool target Dayot Upamecano will extend his stay at the Bundesliga champions. Real Madrid remain Liverpool’s biggest opposition for Guehi’s signature but when will the Eagles skipper leave London?

When will Liverpool make Guehi move

According to BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel, speaking on Football Focus, a January move now looks unlikely: “My understanding at the moment is he probably and is expected to stay at Palace until the end of the season when his contract expires,” declared Mokbel. Look, he’s got so many options in the summer. You’ve got Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan… all these clubs have registered varying degrees of interest in Guehi in recent weeks.

“When you come to the end of the season you’ll have Liverpool back in the mix, Manchester City back in the mix. So he is leaving, he’s going, but I expect that situation to continue until the summer when he’ll have his pick of the clubs.”

Mokbel added: “He’s delivered week in, week out, and the way he’s reacted to that Liverpool move falling through has seen a number of clubs come to the fore. That’s the kind of personality and character people want at their club. He’s done himself a brilliant service to himself this season.

“He wanted to join Liverpool, let’s make no bones about it, but he’s put that behind him and had a brilliant season so far.” Liverpool have done all the hard work already, surely they can’t miss out again?
