Liverpool have made the decision to part ways with this Anfield coach ahead of the new year

Liverpool’s set piece coach Aaron Briggs is reportedly set to leave Anfield, according to a new update from Paul Joyce.

A concerning statistic has emerged from Anfield amid the Reds’ rollercoaster start to the 2025/26 Premier League season. In what has been far from Liverpool’s best showcase of themselves, they have conceded 12 goals from set pieces so far this term.

Liverpool to part ways with set piece coach Aaron Briggs

Taking to social media, Joyce posted on December 30th: “Liverpool set piece coach Aaron Briggs is to leave the club. Responsibility for set pieces will fall across the remaining coaching staff.”

In a follow-up report for The Times, Joyce reports that Briggs has ‘paid the price’ for the Reds’ ongoing frailties. Conceding their 12th goal from set pieces this season raised a huge red flag at the club, as this is now the highest in the current Premier League season.

Liverpool played out a nervy 2-1 win over Wolves after Santiago Bueno’s goal from a corner in the second half looked to put the struggling West Midlands side back in it. The goal was the seventh Liverpool have conceded from corners alone this season.

Slot has ‘repeatedly bemoaned’ Liverpool’s set piece difference this season, which is currently -9 heading into the new year. The manager has claimed that unless there is an improvement in this figure, Liverpool will not secure a top four finish.

Liverpool have been working their way back up the table after a nightmarish dip in form piled the pressure on Slot’s shoulders.

Fabrizio Romano reports on Aaron Briggs departure

Fabrizio Romano has also reported on Briggs leaving Liverpool. He posted similar information to Joyce, writing that the set piece coach will leave the club with immediate effect and have his responsibilities fall the remaining coaching staff.

Briggs joined the club at the start of the 2024/25 season with Slot as part of his backroom staff. He then took on the role of set piece coach in September after Liverpool had initially advertised the position externally, Joyce reported.

This decision comes ahead of Liverpool’s fast-approaching new year fixtures. The Reds will see in the new year sitting fourth in the Premier League but they will face a plucky Leeds United side in their first match of 2026. Leeds are unbeaten in their last five games and recently enjoyed a statement 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Liverpool will then take on Fulham and league leaders Arsenal, all in the first eight days of January, in what will be a tense period for the Reds.
