Chelsea 2-2 AFC Bournemouth, Premier League: Post-match reaction

The one thing we needed Chelsea to avoid today was their Robin Hood syndrome. Yet it looked like we were an out of sync Santa Claus out there with Bournemouth finding some gifts under the Bridge in the early minutes of tonight’s game.

Soon our worries turned into reality. David Brooks broke away from marking in a corner kick routine and the Cherries were in front only a little over five minutes of play.

Luckily Estêvão, eager to prove himself in a rare starting opportunity, put the visitors’ defence to work. So poor they were that the youngster was only stopped by an Antoine Semenyo penalty foul. A long VAR check would give the spot kick to the Blues which Cole Palmer duly converted.

Bournemouth tried to find an immediate answer and Robert Sánchez’s face was the only thing stopping them from doing so. Instead it was Chelsea who would go on to score a second goal, on the back of an amazing Enzo Fernández top bins shot inside the box.

This could have been the start of an absolute thrashing at the Bridge given how fragile Bournemouth’s defence looked throughout. But that ignores how porous we were especially in dead ball situations, including the free throw that gave Justin Kluivert the chance to get things back to square one.

Chelsea threw the kitchen sink at Bournemouth during the second half, trying to pry three points away from an opponent dead set on keeping things stale. It wasn’t enough, as Estêvão is not yet at Eden Hazard levels of winning matches by himself and (mostly) no one else.
