Two out-of-form teams failed to end poor respective runs with a draw that ultimately petered out following a remarkable start.
The game began at breakneck speed. Moisés Caicedo got himself booked inside four minutes, and by the time he had escaped a second yellow not a great deal of time later, three goals had been scored. The defending in that early part of the game reflected how youthful a starting XI Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had selected. With an average age of 23 years and 157 days, it was the youngest starting XI by any side in a Premier League match this season.
Chelsea struggled in particular to deal with Bournemouth’s long throws, and David Brooks opened the scoring from a throw-in early on, first seeing a header from point-blank range saved by Robert Sánchez, before tapping in the rebound. Clocked at 05:58, it was the earliest a visiting side had gone 1-0 up at Chelsea in the Premier League since December 2020, when Patrick Bamford put Leeds ahead at 03:12.
But only a few minutes later, the hosts were level after a VAR review on a challenge by the – if reports are to be believed – soon-to-depart Antoine Semenyo, handed Cole Palmer the opportunity to score from the penalty spot. Unsurprisingly, he made no mistake; since his Chelsea debut in September 2023, only Mohamed Salah has scored more penalties in the Premier League (15) than Palmer (14).
It was Chelsea’s first shot of the match – by which point Bournemouth had had seven – and they took the lead shortly after with their second shot, midway through the first half. Enzo Fernández fired in from 12 yards after some fine work by compatriot Alejandro Garnacho.
But Chelsea only led for a matter of minutes, with Bournemouth equalising from another long throw. This time, Justin Kluivert pounced after Trevoh Chalobah had only succeeded in flicking the ball to the back post after winning the first contact.
The goal meant Bournemouth had become the third team to score two goals from throw-ins in an away Premier League match, along with Sheffield United vs Southampton in October 1993 and Bolton vs QPR in August 2011.
It was only the second Premier League game at Stamford Bridge to see Chelsea both score and concede twice in the opening half an hour, after April 2019 vs Burnley – a game that also finished 2-2. That game proved to be a sign of what was to come here. Like that game, this one calmed down after a frantic opening.
Chelsea vs Bournemouth xg race
Chelsea introduced some experience at the break, with Pedro Neto and Reece James brought on, and they helped the hosts assert a level of dominance that probably would have been expected of them at home to a Bournemouth side who hadn’t won in nine games. For much of the second period, Chelsea were camped inside the opposition half, but they were thwarted time and again by some exceptional, committed Bournemouth defending.
The visitors sank deeper and deeper, and as their players tired, their threat on the break, which had been fairly consistent in the first half, grew weaker. And their manager, Andoni Iraola, delayed looking to his bench, perhaps content with how well his starting players were shutting Chelsea down, and more importantly, content with a point.
In the end, the result brought more dropped points from winning positions for Chelsea – it’s 15 in total for them this season, which is more than any other team in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s winless streak tipped into double figures, but they would have certainly come away from this one happy.
