Liverpool will have the chance to strengthen their squad in just a few days when the January transfer window opens, with speculation mounting over potential targets. One option is Antoine Semenyo, whose £65million release clause becomes active from January 1, 2026. While Manchester City were previously seen as front-runners for the forward, Liverpool could still make a move.
Strengthening at the back is also a priority. Marc Guehi is an obvious target, though Crystal Palace may be reluctant to part with their captain mid-season, even for a significant fee. Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has also been linked with Liverpool, though any move for the German, who is also on Bayern Munich and Barcelona’s radar, would likely take place in the summer rather than this month.
Arne Slot earlier provided a revealing update on Liverpool’s plans for the January transfer window. The Dutchman said: “The outside world wants to believe we have unlimited money but that is not true,” he said. “You insiders know – and you are the only ones because the outside world only talks about our spending – what we have brought in (money) to spend (referring to how Liverpool balanced out their big spend by bringing in more than £200m/$267m in player sales). That is the way we work over here. You then have to accept that in certain games during a season, you are short of a right full back. But we are still able to win. I fully believe in that way of working, by the way.”
RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has been linked with a move to Liverpool, with several top clubs reportedly keeping tabs on the 19-year-old. According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are among the teams monitoring the Ivorian international. United may not pursue another winger after missing out on Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City, but their interest in Diomande could intensify if other clubs make moves for the highly-rated forward during this window.
Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly tracking his progress closely, while Tottenham are also interested in Diomande after agreeing a £35million deal with Crystal Palace to sell forward Brennan Johnson. Some reports have suggested Leipzig value Diomande at £87m (€100m). Diomande is currently away at AFCON.
