A solitary strike from Luke Armstrong was the difference between the Blues and the Shrimps at Brunton Park as both sides played their final fixture of 2025.
The result left the Blues one point behind new National League leaders Boreham Wood after fellow title chasers Forest Green and Rochdale dropped points in their final games of the calendar year.
However, despite picking up three points, Hughes acknowledged that his side 'struggled' in the first-half against Ashvir Singh Johal's possession-focused Shrimps and explained how a tactical tweak at the break helped the Blues regain control of proceedings.
Speaking to the _News & Star_, he said: "It is not easy playing against team's like Morecambe who are good at retaining possession so in the first-half we needed to get our press right and we struggled in fairness and they got out a few times and spread the ball well.
"They have got good technical players who can look after the football, so although they didn't create anything of note, we just had to reorganise at half-time.
"In the second half we changed it round, we changed the shape and that helped us, we got more balls around the ball and locked them in a bit better and were the dominant side in the second half.
"We're not going to win games four or five nil every week, but we found a way to win."
In his post-match interview, Hughes also made reference to a 'strange reaction' to Carlisle United's 3-0 victory on Boxing Day at Gateshead and reaffirmed his desire to win football matches by any means.
"We've got back to back wins now and I am more than happy with that," He said.
"Three nil win away from home at Gateshead at the weekend and there was a strange reaction to that result which I didn't quite understand.
"We are here to win games and that is what we are going to endeavour to do. It doesn't matter how we do it, we always have the intention to win."
