Newcastle United fans in disbelief at Chelsea footage - Pgmol complaint already lodged

Burnley 1-3 Newcastle United: Joe Buck match reaction

Newcastle United latest news: An incident between Chelsea and Bournemouth has caught the attention of Newcastle United fans.

The Blues opened the scoring through Cole Palmer as he slotted a penalty past Djordje Petrovic. However, it was Sam Barrott’s decision to point to the spot that was noticed by supporters of a black-and-white persuasion.

Antoine Semenyo was the man punished for that incident as he collided with Estevao in the penalty box. The tackle from Semenyo, though, was eerily similar to the one that Trevoh Chalobah put in on Anthony Gordon at St James’ Park earlier this month.

That incident went unpunished on the field and was not overturned by VAR, much to the bafflement of many inside St James’ Park that afternoon.

The Premier League Match Centre explained the decision on X on that day, writing: ‘The referee’s call of no penalty to Newcastle was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact from Chalobah on Gordon deemed to be side-to-side in a shielding action and the ball within playing distance.’

Much like the decision in their favour at St James’ Park, the decision to award Chelsea a penalty on Tuesday night ensured they again left with a point having shared four goals with the Cherries.

Newcastle United lodge PGMOL complaint

There will be few Newcastle United fans that feel Chelsea shouldn’t have been awarded a penalty on Tuesday night, but the inconsistency between the two decisions will rankle in the fan base. In the wake of that call eleven days ago, Newcastle United wrote to the PGMOL to seek clarification on why they were not awarded a penalty.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning, Howe confirmed that the club had written to the PGMOL: “Yes, we will be seeking clarification.

“That call has already gone in, not from me personally, but from the club. We just want to know the thought process behind the decision.”

Asked if the feedback will change how his side approaches defending in the penalty box, Howe added: “That’s a dangerous thing! I wouldn’t want to train my players to deliver that kind of challenge in the box. That would give the referee a decision to make.

“One of the arts of defending is not to put yourself in that position. I still believe it was a clear penalty having reviewed it. But it wasn’t given and my time is best spent looking forward and not back.”

Following that draw with Chelsea, Newcastle United have lost one and won one on the road at Old Trafford and Turf Moor respectively. They return to home comforts to kick-off 2026 with four successive home matches.

Crystal Palace are their visitors on Sunday at St James’ Park for a Premier League clash before Leeds United make the relatively short trip to the north east three days later. The Magpies then welcome Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth to Tyneside for an FA Cup meeting on Saturday 10 January before Manchester City head to the north east for the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final meeting.
