Marc Guehi is set to become a free agent at the end of the season after informing Crystal Palace he will not sign a new contract. Liverpool were close to signing the centre-back last summer, but Palace blocked a £35m deal on deadline day after failing to secure a replacement. The Reds remain interested in the 25-year-old, who can negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs from January 1, although competition is expected to be strong if he becomes available on a free transfer.

Real Madrid have now emerged as the latest European heavyweight to join the race for his signature. The Spanish giants are in contact with the England international’s representatives and have already held initial talks over a potential free transfer next summer. The Englishman is said to be focused on Crystal Palace and helping the club finish the season strongly.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is staying tight-lipped on Guehi’s future ahead of the January transfer window. Glasner said: “You will ask me all these questions again and again and again. I need to find one answer. I will always tell you the same, as long as I don’t know anything else. Because, believe me, if I knew something. I would tell you. So I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t know what will happen with Marc [Guehi]. I don’t know what will happen with new players, and I don’t know what will happen with JP [Jean-Philippe Mateta], I don’t know anything.”

He added: “Tomorrow starts the next crazy month in football. And I don’t know, I’ve experienced so many different situations. The next 31 days will be everything is possible, like always, and everything I say today might be wrong in two days. And I think most of what I say today will be definitely wrong by the end of the transfer window, because I don’t know, and that’s why I don’t really care about it, especially I don’t want to talk about it in public. Everything I say today might be wrong. That’s why the best thing is say nothing, and we’re concentrating on the team that is available, that should win, will give everything to win tomorrow against Fulham.”
