5 Teams Predicted to Win AFCON 2025, According to AI

AFCON 2025 is well underway. In true AFCON fashion, we’ve seen plenty of spectacular goals, crunching tackles and surprising results, but who will win the coveted trophy when all is said and done?

We asked ChatGPT for its thoughts on the matter. We’ll list its five favourites to win the tournament and explain its reasoning – does ChatGPT’s picks align with your own?

Nigeria

Nigeria were many people’s pick before the start of the tournament to win the whole thing. With attacking talent at their disposal such as Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen, it’s no surprise that they’re one of the tournament favourites.

Nevertheless, ChatGPT thinks they are the fifth most likely team to win AFCON 2025. In truth, their team is somewhat unbalanced – they have some brilliant forwards, but they lack quality depth in midfield and defence.

They have already qualified for the knockout rounds of the tournament, despite having played only two games – their wins over Tanzania and Tunisia was all the Super Eagles needed to progress.

Algeria

Former Manchester City superstar Riyad Mahrez has shown he has plenty left in the tank for Algeria this year. Despite being 34 years of age, he is the joint-top goalscorer in the competition at the time of writing.

His goals have put Algeria in an excellent position to qualify for the next round – it would take an almighty turn-around from Sudan to knock them out.

With this being said, ChatGPT thinks that Algeria are the fourth-most likely team to win AFCON this year – it believes there are three superior teams.

Senegal

This might come as a shock to some. Depsite having the strongest squad on paper, ChatGPT has picked Senegal as only the third-best team in AFCON 2025.

So far, this haven’t been going as smoothly as the Lions of Teranga may have hoped. They were able to comfortably dispatch of Botswana, but were held to a draw by DR Congo in their second Group C game.

Their qualification for the knockout rounds is still hanging in the balance, but one would expect them to see off Benin and secure their place in the next round.

Egypt

This year, Mohamed Salah is a man on a mission. Egypt are the most successful nation in AFCON history, but they have never won it under the watch of the Liverpool icon.

It is a noticeable gap in Salah’s trophy cabinet – and one that will surely get under his skin. At 33 years of age, he isn’t getting any younger – time is running out for him to win Africa’s top prize.

Despite this, ChatGPT is predicting heartbreak for Egypt this year – it believes they will finish as runners-up at the end of the competition.

Morocco

Morocco aren’t favourites purely because of their host status – they also have a very strong squad and an intelligent manager to back it up.

Two of their players are among the joint-top scorers at the tournament alongside Mahrez – both Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi have three goals to their name at this stage in the competition.

If Morocco’s wonderful display at the 2022 World Cup is anything to go by, they are certainly the team to beat in AFCON this year.
