Man United have been linked to signing a striker in the January transfer window.
United have a chance to finish in the Champions League places this season based on their start, but they need to continue their momentum, and they have struggled to find a regular starter at the striker position.
Heading into January, the Red Devils are still looking for a reliable striker despite the fact that they signed Benjamin Sesko in the summer. Sesko has scored just two goals in 15 Premier League games and is becoming the next Rasmus Hojlund. So, the Red Devils have been linked to signing a new number nine.
Man United could sign Yan Diomande
In terms of potential options of a striker that United could sign in January, RB Leipzig star Yan Diomande seems a likely prospect. The 19-year-old has made 14 appearances this season so far, scoring six goals and three assists, and he can play on both wings or as a number nine.
It has been reported they are in the battle for Diomande alongside Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, so would likely need to get in quickly, as they can’t offer Champions League football like the others.
It is understood that a summer move is more likely for Diomande, but he could move in January, and he is likely to command a fee of at least £52m, but it could rise to £61m, meaning United would potentially have to spend big like they did on Sesko in the summer.
Diomande could be the next Haaland
Many fans are quickly losing patience with Sesko, who missed a huge chance to score against Wolves earlier in the week. He hasn’t been able to hit the heights that he managed in the Bundesliga, but if United were to sign Diomande, they could be getting a real star.
The Ivorian striker has incredible goal-scoring stats in his career so far, so much so, that they are reminiscent of a very young Erling Haaland. He has scored six goals in 14 Bundesliga appearances and has that physical ability that Sesko has seemed to lack in recent weeks.
Sesko seems to get in the right positions well, but Diomande is pacey, tall, and strong, and could be a real handful for Premier League defenders, much like Haaland. Again, the benefit of the 19-year-old Ivorian is that he can play as a wide player as well as a striker, something that Haaland can’t do.
But, much like Haaland, he is tearing up the Bundesliga and could come to the Premier League with a massive reputation.
A report last month from teamTALK even indicated the excitement around Diomade with a direct comparison to Haaland. A source told the outlet: “In terms of talent level, Red Bull has not experienced an interest like this since Erling Haaland. The ceiling for this kid is that high.”
