Liverpool 'need' one player if they want to win trophies and matches, according to club legend

Liverpool look set to miss out on the Premier League title after a difficult 2025/26 campaign so far.

Fans have discussed replacing Arne Slot in the dugout at times this term, most recently during a run of just three wins from 12 across all competitions.

Form has since taken an upturn, but Liverpool’s performances have still not been great against the likes of nine-man Tottenham Hotspur and 20th-place Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Reds are out of the Carabao Cup already and sit 13 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal going into the weekend’s action.

Can they still be successful this season after such a poor first half of the campaign? Well, club legend Ian Rush seems to think one man holds the key to Liverpool winning both matches and trophies.

Ian Rush says Liverpool need Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah was dropped by Arne Slot last month amid the player hitting out at the club during an interview after a 3-3 draw with Leeds United.

Despite Salah’s future at Liverpool being questioned in the weeks since that outburst, Rush believes Salah is key to the Reds’ success moving forward.

As per BBC Sport, he said: “The best thing I’ve heard since was Curtis Jones saying Mo [Salah] had apologised. It is over now.

“We need Salah if we are going to be successful in terms of winning games and trophies.

“It is good to see him scoring goals for Egypt, but now we want to have him back scoring for Liverpool.”

Liverpool have a VERY strange record against Leeds! What do you think the score is going to be on New Year’s Day?

When is Mohamed Salah back at Liverpool

Salah made his return to the Liverpool squad against Brighton and Hove Albion, coming off the bench following an injury to Joe Gomez.

The winger has since left to compete at the AFCON with Egypt over the winter.

Salah has shone for his country during their three group matches, helping them top Group B.

Egypt will now play Benin in a Round of 16 tie on January 5, a match they are expected to win.

Should Salah’s country make it all the way to the 2026 AFCON final, he will be away from Liverpool until after January 18, when the showpiece is set to take place.

The Reds have a number of fixtures between now and then, including a huge meeting with Arsenal on January 8.
