Liverpool and the footballing world mourned the passing of Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life alongside his brother Andre Silva in a car accident last summer.

Reflecting on his year, Van Dijk wrote on Instagram: "2025... it's a year that will always stay with me. It was a year of success on the pitch - The Premier League. Achieving World Cup Qualification. Breaking the record of being captain for my country.

"We shared times together that will last a lifetime. So many highs, moments of joy & achievements that we should be proud of.

"[But] 2025 brought one unimaginable low. We lost our brother Jots.

"He was more than just part of a football team. His absence is felt every day, and his loss changed us forever.

"I want to wish you all happiness, health, peace, love, positivity & success for 2026."

Jota's wife Rute Cardoso was back at Anfield with her children as Liverpool took on Wolves in the Premier League last weekend.

Dinis and Duarte were mascots as they led the teams out.

Both sets of supporters paid special tributes throughout the match on an incredibly emotional afternoon.

Rute took to Instagram after the game and said how much the support has meant to the family.

"From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the club and to all the fans for the love, respect and support shown during this incredibly difficult time," she said.

"Your messages and gestures have meant more than words can express."

Liverpool supporters have honoured the Portuguese player throughout the campaign - often displaying banners around Anfield and singing his name during matches.

Arne Slot's side will be in action on New Year's Day, facing Leeds United at Anfield (5.30pm).
