Ecuador defender set to join Liverpool

Are Liverpool set to bring in a new central defender in the January 2026 transfer window?

It seems as if that may be the case.

The club missed out on signing Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day and have been regretting it ever since.

It’s primarily due to circumstances that many didn’t expect happening.

Firstly, there was the serious injury sustained by Giovanni Leoni.

Leoni tore his ACL on his debut for The Reds and was ruled out for the season because of it.

To compound things further, there has been major speculation around the future of Ibrahima Konate.

Konate has entered the last six months of his contract and could leave Liverpool on a free in the summer.

Even without the contract situation, Konate hasn’t exactly had the most reassuring of seasons and likely would have dropped to the bench if there was another defender challenging for his place.

With Guehi seemingly waiting until the summer to make a decision on where he plays next season, fans have asked Liverpool to bring a defender in during the winter window to push on in the second half of the season.

And South American news outlet Bolavip are reporting that Liverpool are set to make that request come true.

Bolavip report that Liverpool are set to sign Joel Ordonez in the next few days.

According to the publication, Ordonez is set to triple the wages that he’s receiving at current employers Club Brugge once he moves to Merseyside.

The 21-year-old Ecuador defender is choosing between Liverpool and Inter Milan, after Chelsea pulled out of the race due to the fee requested from the Belgian side.

For now, it seems to be a straight race between Liverpool and Inter Milan, with Bolavip claiming The Reds as favourites to sign the defender.

Reports in March stated that Liverpool scouted Ordonez and it seems that the interest has now been backed up by a bid from the club.

We will wait to see if Joel Ordonez gets announced as a Liverpool player now that the window is officially open for transfer business.
