Jeremie Frimpong impressed at right wing as Liverpool opened 2026 with an underwhelming 0-0 draw.
It may have been another poor outing for Liverpool despite it being a new year, but there were a few things that stood out for the right reasons.

One of these was Frimpong’s performance at right wing, as although he did not manage to pick up a goal or an assist, he was not far away from doing so.
He caused a lot of problems down the right and put some good balls into the box, suggesting he will not be a bad option in this position for future games.
However, there was one thing in his game that really stood out, with Jamie Carragher saying that he did something that the Premier League no longer sees all that often.
Jeremie Frimpong kept wanting to attack on the outside of the defender rather than going inside
Frimpong is not conventionally a winger but he certainly plays like one, so it was no surprise to see Arne Slot start him out there against Leeds.
He offers something a little different too due to his electrifying pace, with Liverpool looking to utilise that when attacking the Leeds backline.

Carragher noticed that unlike other wingers in the league, Frimpong kept wanting to go on the outside of the defender, something that worked to good effect despite the ex-Liverpool star saying it is not something seen much anymore in football.
“Jeremie Frimpong looks dangerous every time the ball goes on the outside,” he said on Sky Sports.
“Frimpong always gets that half a yard, and you just don’t see that in the game.”
His pace really has added something that Liverpool have not really had before, meaning they might just have their new winger without having to spend any more money.
Liverpool fans will love Jeremie Frimpong’s approach compared to Cody Gakpo’s

Although Cody Gakpo did not start, Liverpool fans would not have minded at all, with the Dutchman being too predictable when he is on the pitch.
Far too often he wants to cut inside and try and curl an effort or cross towards the back post, something that is too easy to read for defenders.
Frimpong, however, was much more unpredictable, offering a different variation of attack on the other flank.
This means that, should Gakpo get his regular place back in the team, having the Dutchman on the other side might help the balance going forward, with it not a bad outing for Frimpong once again.
