Liverpool are keen to add long-term defensive reinforcements with Ibrahima Konate out of contract this summer

Liverpool managed to keep a third clean sheet in five matches in all competitions as they drew 0-0 with Leeds United in their first game of the New Year.

It was a contest of little chances, with the Reds unable to really trouble the visiting defence who were able to sit back and soak up what the home side threw their way.

Leeds picked their moment to chase a winner and had a brief spell of pressure but could not find a way through. Ex-Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted at the Anfield Road end but his goal was ruled out as he had drifted offside.

In games against Tottenham and Wolves, Liverpool conceded sloppy goals but since changing up his formation and line-up - Arne Slot’s side have conceded fewer goals. They do need to look long-term at replacing Virgil van Dijk while doubts remain over Ibrahima Konate’s future as he is now in the final six months of his contract.

Nathan Collins of interest to Liverpool

He is the second Premier League captain strongly linked with the Reds, as Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi remains a target after his summer transfer fell through on deadline day after an agreement had been reached.

Liverpool need more leaders back in their side and ones who will be able to shoulder the leadership burden with the likes of Van Dijk, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah likely to leave the club within the next 18 months based on their contract situations.

“There’s so much potential in Nathan,” Thomas Frank said of him back in 2033.

“He’s just started his career, more or less. I know he’s played Premier League football before, but at 22 you are not even close to your highest level.”

Collins is a no-nonsense defender with clear leadership qualities and is akin to Jamie Carragher, who was revered by Liverpool fans for his passion and commitment while also being one of the leaders of the Reds during his 737 games for the club.

This season, Collins has the third most blocks in the division with 25. At the time of writing, that did not include any he made in Brentford’s game with Tottenham. He also had the seventh most clearances.

He is clearly a player who likes to be at the heart of all that is good from his side. After all these years could Liverpool finally sign a player who will evoke memories of Carragher? Only time will tell.
