Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa is being linked with a return to Italy amid continues limited minutes at Anfield
Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa is likely to stay at Anfield this month amid continued reports linking him with a return to Serie A.
The Italian has been a fringe figure on Merseyside since his £12m move from Juventus in the summer of 2024. He has seen more game-time this season and has become somewhat of a cult hero among supporters.
Since that report, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has shed some light on Chiesa’s future.
“Salah is obviously already out for the Africa Cup of Nations. Chiesa started the last match, so at the moment it’s not yet a certainty,” he said on his Italian language YouTube channel. “In fact, those close to Chiesa expect that Liverpool won’t want to release him in January.”
Chiesa will be keen to be a part of the Italy squad in March when they enter the play-offs for the World Cup this summer and if they qualify for the tournament, he will be eager to represent his country in Canada, USA and Mexico.
However, his lack of minutes could prove a huge stumbling block. With Arne Slot in charge, Chiesa does not appear to become someone who will become a regular starter. Even with Mohamed Salah dropped from the starting line-up before his departure to the African Cup of Nations, Chiesa was not put in in his place.
He has started just one game in the Premier League or Champions League this season but did make the starting XI in both League Cup games. He has two goals and three assists and still has plenty to offer from the bench.
However, that role is something the Italian legend will be not be completely satisfied with.
