Arne Slot has unfortunately been proven right about inconsistent Liverpool star after Leeds stalemate - opinion

It was an all-round drab showing from Liverpool when they clashed with Leeds United at Anfield.

Jeremie Frimpong looked sharp during the first half and came close to setting up Hugo Ekitike.

However, barring some individual moments of quality from the out-of-position right-back, Liverpool were poor against Leeds.

Florian Wirtz drew the ire of fans for his quiet showing after a big upturn in form across previous matches.

However, for the most part, Liverpool’s squad, especially their midfield, struggled to create anything of note.

Arne Slot has been proven right about Curtis Jones

But this is not the first time in recent matches that the Reds have looked off their game in the centre of the pitch.

Curtis Jones was the ‘unsung hero’ after Liverpool’s win over Brighton and Hove Albion on December 13.

After that fixture, Slot laid down a challenge to Jones, urging the Englishman to start being more consistent.

He said pre-Tottenham: “He’s done really well in the last three games, and it is not the first time but maybe since I am here it is three times in a row for the first time very good performances.

“Maybe I didn’t like them as much as I did recently, so it is a challenge for him to go to the fourth or fifth game in a row.”

However, what has happened in the three games since, including the Tottenham win, is the steady decline of displays from the midfielder.

Fans turned on Jones post-Wolves last weekend after weeks of praising the Englishman.

And his showing against Leeds was perhaps the worst of them all since Slot set him the challenge of staying consistent.

Yet, there’s not an awful lot the Liverpool boss can change right now. Alexis Mac Allister could drop deeper alongside Ryan Gravenberch moving forward, but we saw earlier this season that did not end too well.

A new midfielder arriving in January could be just what the club needs, but at present, no deal seems close in that department.
