Liverpool transfer news as they reportedly close in on a deal to sign centre-back Joel Ordonez.

Liverpool are closing in on completing a signing in the January transfer window, it has been claimed.

Reports suggest that the Reds are moving towards a deal for Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge. According to Expreso, one of Ecuador’s leading newspapers, Liverpool are ‘one signature away’ from finalising a swoop for the centre-back in the January transfer window.

Ordonez has spent the past two-and-a-half seasons at Club Brugge, helping them win the Belgian title in 2024 and reach the Champions League last 16 last season. The defender has made 105 appearances, scoring four goals. He has also been capped 14 times for Ecuador.

Ordonez has been linked with several clubs, including Chelsea and Inter Milan. But it’s suggested in his homeland that Liverpool’s sporting project has ‘tipped the scales’ and that the Reds feel that the 21-year-old fits their project.

Expreso reports that Michael Edwards, who serves as Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football, is thrashing out the finer details of the deal. Main terms have already been agreed, it is said. No price tag has been given.

Liverpool are in need of an addition in central defence given their lack of options. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are the only current fit, senior options with Joe Gomez missing the past three weeks with a muscle injury and has had fitness woes over the past few years. Meanwhile, Giovanni Leoni - signed from Parma for £26 million last summer - suffered an ACL injury on his debut and won’t play again this season.

In addition, Konate’s contract expires in June and he is still to commit his future to Anfield despite having been in negotiations.

The Reds did try to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the previous transfer window. A £35 million fee was agreed and Guehi underwent a medical before Palace pulled the plug at the 11th hour. Guehi’s Selhurst Park deal expires in the summer but he’s expected to stay in South London for the remainder of the campaign.
