A Manchester City winger showed frustrating flashes before injury struck against Sunderland

Manchester City had their chances to win last night’s [nil-all stalemate](https://esteemedkompany.com/2026/01/01/manchester-city-0-sunderland-0-city-are-held-to-a-draw-by-sunderland-tonight/) with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last night. Savinho missed two extremely good chances just after halftime to give his team the lead last night. Unfortunately, Savinho [picked up an injury](https://www.espn.com.au/football/story/_/id/47475444/guardiola-rodri-manchester-city-return) which saw him come off just after he saw his second good chance saved by Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs in last night’s match. But before injury struck, Savinho was again frustrating as he teased and promised and delivered very little in terms of end product.

Savinho needs to take his chances to establish himself as a Manchester City player.

Taking Savinho’s injury out of the equation for now, the Brazilian winger again had his moments to make an impact for Manchester City in a crucial game last night. In the first-half, Savinho was a threat on the left wing for Pep Guardiola’s side. He did get at Sunderland right-back, Trai Hume, but his delivery into the area wasn’t at the required standard. That has been a source of frustration in Savinho’s play. The other side of the Brazilian international’s game which needs improvement stood out in the second-half.

Savinho squandered arguably the best chance of the match 75 seconds after halftime last night. A free-flowing City move involving Rodri and Phil Foden saw Rayan Cherki picked out on the right wing in acres of space. Cherki played a teasing ball across the six-yard box which Savinho got on the end of. But the Brazilian winger put his chance over the bar. A minute later, Savinho was put through on the left and got himself into a good position to shoot. He put in a good shot that Robin Roefs saved. Those two minutes of play showed the frustrating side of Savinho’s play. He can tease, and look so good, but the end product is lacking.

At 21 years of age, Savinho has time to improve as a player. That isn’t in doubt. He should under the guidance of Pep Guardiola. But after watching Savinho play last night you sense he needs a defining moment as a Manchester City player. That could and should have come last night but it wasn’t to be.

Unfortunately, injury has struck Savinho but the areas of improvement in his game remain the same.

Savinho suffered an injury after his shot was saved by Robin Roefs. He was replaced by Jeremy Doku in the 51st minute. Savinho’s injury capped off a frustrating night for the Brazilian winger. He could’ve had a match-defining impact but it wasn’t to be. After being at Manchester City for near enough to eighteen months now, Savinho simply has to improve his end product. There is no escaping this fact.

The hope is that Savinho’s injury he picked up against Sunderland isn’t too serious. That remains to be seen. But to fulfil his tremendous potential, Savinho simply must improve his delivery and finishing. That is the challenge for a player who teases so much, but often fails to capitalise on the key moments that come his way.
