How Hugo Ekitike 'potentially cost' Liverpool in draw with Leeds explained by Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool continued their unbeaten run with a 0-0 draw against Leeds United at Anfield in midweek.

It may be eight games without defeat, but the mood on Merseyside is low after another questionable performance from the Reds.

Liverpool fans are talking about replacing Arne Slot, with it becoming clear their only issue is finding a suitable coach to come in for the Dutchman.

It’s easy to see why supporters are growing restless, given Liverpool created very little during the clash and Jeremie Frimpong was the only real bright spark.

However, there were a couple of moments when Hugo Ekitike could have added to his goal tally across the 90 minutes.

Frimpong played a lovely cross to the Frenchman shortly after the half-hour mark, but he headed the ball away from goal.

Elsewhere, Liverpool potentially could have had a penalty in the first half when Ekitike was through on goal.

However, the striker did not go down despite being under pressure from a Leeds defender, something Daniel Sturridge thinks could have cost the home team.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “He [Ekitike] gets his shot off. The point for me is he’s trying to stay on his feet. If he tumbles over now, does he get a penalty?

“I think he does. He does. It’s the timing of when you fall and Ekitike has been an honest player there.

“He said, you know what? I want to get a shot off here, so I’m going to try and stay on my feet. In turn, that’s potentially cost the team.”

Arne Slot reacts to Liverpool penalty claim vs Leeds

Arne Slot also commented on the penalty shout when speaking live at his pre-match press conference on Thursday evening.

He said: “There was an obvious moment in the first half where we didn’t go to the floor, which I understand because every time we go to the floor we never get a penalty.

“Those are the margins. I see other teams going down in situations like that, but we don’t do that. We’ve gone down when fouls were made multiple times this season and not got a penalty.

“In general, we do speak about it and other players going down easily to get free kicks or other moments but this is who we are.”

If Liverpool had been awarded the penalty and scored, they might have won the fixture and been on 35 points instead of 33.

That would have left them 10 adrift of Arsenal going into a busy week, which includes a meeting with the Gunners on Thursday.
