Dean Smith could reportedly offer Harvey Elliott a way out of his nightmare loan spell at Aston Villa.
The 22-year-old joined Villa on loan from Liverpool on deadline day in the summer transfer window, with the deal including an obligation to buy for £35 million if he made 10 appearances.
However, after featuring just five times, Elliott’s future now looks almost certain to lie elsewhere.
He has not played under Unai Emery since Villa’s 2–0 win against Feyenoord at the start of October.
Both Villa and Liverpool are said to be exploring solutions that would see the midfielder return to Anfield this month.
But because Elliott has already appeared for both Liverpool and Aston Villa this season, he is ineligible to play for another European club during the current campaign.
MLS, however, operates on a different calendar, meaning he would be able to feature there – something that has alerted clubs across the Atlantic.
According to Mail Sport, Charlotte FC – now managed by former Villa boss Dean Smith – are in the frame to sign Elliott.
While it would only be a short-term solution for his career, Elliott has limited options available, as players cannot represent three clubs competing on the traditional August-to-May European schedule in the same season.
