Sunderland injury and transfer updates
Sunderland played out a 0-0 draw with Manchester City on Thursday.
The Black Cats are still unbeaten in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light this season after producing a gutsy display against the title challengers, with a disciplined defensive performance interspersed by a series of promising openings at the other end.
A point against City leaves Regis Le Bris’ side seventh in the table, with 29 points at the halfway point of the new campaign, and in their analysis of the contest, both Lineker and Shearer were quick to hail the home side for the manner in which they fought their way to a sharing of the spoils.
What did Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer say about Sunderland vs Man City?
Reflecting on both Sunderland’s outing and Leeds United’s 0-0 stalemate with Liverpool earlier in the day during the latest episode of The Rest Is Football, Lineker said: “You’ve got to give a shout out - I mean, it wasn’t quite happening for either City or Liverpool - but well done Sunderland and Leeds. Really, really gritty performances by both teams that were promoted last season.”
Shearer replied: “I saw more of the Sunderland game. I did expect Man City to go there and win, because with the players that they’ve got away, Sunderland, and one or two injuries etc, I just thought, in the form that they’re in, Man City would go there and win. But no-one has gone there and won. So yeah, a really good result for Sunderland, thoroughly deserved it. And same thing again with Leeds going to Anfield. I thought Liverpool would win against Leeds, but two really good performances, and good point for Sunderland and for Leeds.”
Lineker continued: “There’s a list of teams that are unbeaten in home matches in the Premier League this season, and there’s only two teams on it: Arsenal and Sunderland. I mean, you can see why. They even had one or two chances in that game. I know City dominated, particularly in the second half, and they couldn’t find a way through, but they [Sunderland] were still a threat on occasions.”

Shearer concurred, replying: “As much as it pains me to say it, I thought Sunderland were well worthy of their point.” Lineker went on: “They’ve got results this season - not all victories, but no defeats - against Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.”
“And Newcastle...”, Shearer interjected. “Yeah, they’ve been brilliant. You’ve got to say, well done, Sunderland - for the way they’ve set up, for the fans, in their home games, any team going to Sunderland know that they’re going to have to play their best game to come away with anything.”
