Everton are looking to bolster their defensive options this year

Everton are expected to pursue some new signings this month, now the January transfer window is open for business.

The Toffees saw out 2025 with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest, having already beaten them 3-0 earlier in December. They are currently eighth in the Premier League table, just two points behind the top five, and five off Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

According to the Mail’s Simon Jones, David Moyes is prioritising the signing of a new striker and right-back this month. However, the search has not been straight forward so far, with the club ‘struggling to find the right profile of player’.

Who are Everton looking to sign in January?

Everton are eager to strengthen their options in attack, particularly in the No.9 position. Moyes currently has two natural centre-forwards on his roster but both have struggled to make a significant impact so far this season.

Just three Premier League goals have come from Beto and and last summer’s new addition Thierno Barry combined this season. While Barry got himself on the scoresheet against Nottingham Forest last time out, Beto hasn’t found the back of the net since August.

Brief interest in Ivan Toney has passed, as his wages in Saudi Arabia has been deemed too pricey for the Toffees. Meanwhile, Jorgen Strand Larsen has also been discussed but he has struggled to replicate last season’s form as Wolves’ dreadful winless run continues.

At right-back, Everton have sent scouts to watch Guela Doue of RC Strasbourg. The Blues reportedly prefer the idea of signing a ready-made, proven Premier League performer, but Doue is also on the radar.

Guela Doue once backed to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool

Football Italia reported on AC Milan’s interest in Doue over the summer but claimed they were a ‘long way off’ reaching a deal with Strasbourg. The Serie A giants had tabled a reported €18 million (£16m) offer, which was significantly less than the €28 million (£24m) asking price set by the French club.

This isn’t the first time Doue has been linked with a move to the Premier League, or indeed Merseyside. During the lead-up to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit from Liverpool, the Ivory Coast international was named by multiple outlets as a potential replacement.

In the end, the Reds signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. Prior to the Dutchman’s deal, the likes of BBC Sport looked at how Doue could have potentially replaced Alexander-Arnold.

A report from May 2025 read. “Like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Doue likes receiving the ball deeper in his own half before progressing the ball further up the pitch with long passes forward to his winger or striker. Doue would be ideal for Slot's backline if they plan to bring in an adventurous full-back on the other side.”

Other independent websites also discussed the Doue as an option to succeed Alexander-Arnold. Anfield Index described the 23-year-old as ‘physically imposing, positionally sound, and technically assured’.
