It’s a pretty open secret that Liverpool are in the market for a new central defender.
This wasn’t necessarily evidenced in the 0-0 draw with Leeds United last night.
In that game, The Reds’ defence generally coped well and weren’t too bothered with the Leeds attackers.
Even when Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the back of the net when he was offside, it wasn’t from an obvious error from a defender.
However, player transfer decisions aren’t done in isolation based on one or two games.
Anyone who has looked at Liverpool this season knows that they could do with another central defender.
The uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate’s future makes the case for a player coming in who can slot straight into the first team.
But, as many people know, Liverpool like to buy players based on future potential rather than them going straight into the first team as starters.
The record breaking summer transfer window was an anomaly in that sense, with previous windows showing Liverpool looking to buy players before their peak and developing them at the club.
Giovanni Leoni joining from Parma was a case in point on that.
Unfortunately for the Italian defender, he suffered a horrific injury on his debut and will miss the rest of the season.
However, it seems that Liverpool are happy to continue going down this route of looking to buy potential and seem to have entered discussions to continue that trend.
The Athletic report Liverpool are in talks to sign Austria Wien central defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe.
Ndukwe is just 17 and wouldn’t be allowed to move to the United Kingdom until he turns 18 – which is in the summer.
An Austria youth international defender, it is reported that Ifeanyi Ndukwe would work with the under 21 side upon arrival with the club expecting him having the potential to become a part of the first team in the future.
Ndukwe hasn’t yet made his first team debut for Austria Wien, but has performed very well at youth level and is seen as a player with a bright future in the game.
Keep on eye on how this develops over the coming months as we could see the defender join Liverpool in the summer window.
