Liverpool 0-0 Leeds: Match Review
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordenez in the January transfer window.
Club Brugge have confirmed that Joel Ordenez will be included in their squad for a training squad amid speculation over a potential move to Liverpool.
Reports in the centre-back’s native Ecuador have claimed that the Reds have agreed personal terms ahead of a potential January swoop. It’s claimed that Michael Edwards, who serves as Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football, is thrashing out the final details of a possible move.
However, it appears to be business as usual for Brugge. After Belgium’s winter break, they will travel to Marbella for a week-long training camp. Blauw-Zwart have named Ordenez in their 30-man squad list ahead of making the trip to Spain. Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is also part of Brugge’s set-up.
While it is suggested in Ecuador that Liverpool are advancing for Ordenez, 21, there is little to suggest things are accelerating from the Merseyside end.
The Reds are expected to have a quiet January transfer window, although they are need need of defensive reinforcements. Giovanni Leoni is ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his ACL, while Joe Gomez has had injury issues over the past few years. In addition, Ibrahima Konate is out of contract at the end of the campaign and has yet to commit fresh terms.
Liverpool were keen on signing Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window. They agreed a £35 million deal with Crystal Palace and Guehi underwent a medical before the Eagles pulled the plug at the 11th hour.
Guehi’s Palace deal comes to a conclusion in June and it has been confirmed that he will not sign a new contract. The likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all said to be keen on signing the England international, who will be available on a free transfer.
While Liverpool have tracked Ordenez, the fact that they signed Leoni, who is only aged 19, may suggest that the Reds would want someone with more experience when they bring in a new centre-half.
