Report: Liverpool target who charmed Arne Slot given £40m-plus price-tag amid interest from Premier League rival

Liverpool have been linked with several players despite the 2026 January transfer window being open for less than two days.

The main saga in the opening 48 hours or so has centred around a potential centre-back addition.

It was claimed that Liverpool were closing in on Joel Ordonez from Belgian outfit Club Brugge.

However, on Friday, Anfield sources have denied that an Ordonez deal is imminent.

How happy would you be if Liverpool sign Joel Ordonez?

Another player who doesn’t appear to be closing in on a move to Liverpool right now is AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit.

Kees Smit price-tag amid Newcastle United interest

It was reported back in November that the Reds were seriously considering an offer for Smit, with it added that Arne Slot had been charmed by the player when he worked as an assistant at Alkmaar back in 2017.

Interest in the 19-year-old has gone quiet from Liverpool’s end, but fellow Premier League side Newcastle United are thought to have been keen on the player.

However, as explained by the Daily Mail, the midfielder moving to St James’ Park does seem unlikely.

The Magpies had Smit top of their wishlist, but he is not expected to secure a move this winter.

If the player does move, though, Newcastle are unlikely to be able to afford his price-tag, with a fee upwards of £40m mooted.

Liverpool can only sign ONE player this January, which position should they strengthen?

Midfielder could leave Liverpool

Whether or not Liverpool decide to bid for the Dutchman remains to be seen, but midfield reinforcements in January could be helpful.

Curtis Jones has struggled for consistency in Slot’s pivot alongside Ryan Gravenberch.

Outside of the Englishman, however, there are very few options who could come into the eleven.

Alexis Mac Allister, if Dominik Szoboszlai starts through the middle, is one name, while Wataru Endo is also still at the club.

However, the Japan international was struggling for game time prior to his recent injury, and Bild have suggested this week that Endo could leave Liverpool.
