Barcelona monitor former La Masia defender’s situation as financial opportunity emerges

Barcelona are continuing to track the situation of former La Masia defender Mika Marmol, but not for the reasons many might expect.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the club’s interest is driven far more by financial logic than by immediate sporting plans.

Marmol is currently in the final months of his contract with Las Palmas, which is set to expire at the end of the season.

With no renewal in sight, the club has already accepted that the centre-back is likely to leave during the winter transfer window.

This is where Barcelona’s interest comes into play, as they still hold 50% of the player’s economic rights from the deal agreed in the summer of 2023.

Las Palmas open to selling

Las Palmas are open to listening to offers, although Marmol’s €10 million release clause is widely considered unrealistic given his contract situation.

For a defender who could walk away for free in 2026, clubs are expected to negotiate a lower fee.

Any sale, even at a reduced price, would still benefit Barcelona financially, allowing them to collect a percentage of the transfer at a time when every euro matters.

From a sporting perspective, Marmol remains an important figure for Las Palmas.

He has been a regular starter under Luis Garcia, and his departure is already viewed internally as inevitable.

Barcelona, meanwhile, see this as an opportunity to generate funds without having to actively sell a first-team player.

There is another option

That said, there is also a secondary scenario being quietly monitored at Camp Nou.

Barcelona are currently short of left-sided centre-backs and are exploring low-cost options for January.

Marmol fits that profile perfectly, as he knows the club well and even made his La Liga debut for the first team in the past.

However, no concrete move is being planned at this stage because Hansi Flick has made it clear that Barcelona will not overspend in January.

For now, Marmol’s future appears more linked to Barcelona’s balance sheet than their starting XI.
