Out-of-favour Liverpool player 'not keen' on potential move as one club mulls over making loan offer - journalist

Liverpool have been pretty active on both fronts during the first few days of the January transfer window.

In terms of incomings, it emerged on Friday that Liverpool agreed a deal for Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who will move to Anfield after the 2025/26 season comes to a close.

There has already been one exit this month as well, with James Norris securing a permanent transfer to Ireland.

Elsewhere, Joel Ordonez is thought to be a target, though a deal isn’t as close as some sources have suggested.

Liverpool can only sign ONE player this January, which position should they strengthen?

Harvey Elliott doesn’t want one transfer in January

There has also been talk about the future of out-of-favour Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott this month.

The Englishman is currently on loan at Aston Villa, whom he would join permanently if he makes 10 Premier League appearances.

However, he is struggling for game time under Unai Emery, leaving Elliott in a tricky situation impacted by FIFA rules, which dictate that a player cannot play for more than two clubs in one season.

The way around this would be for the player to return to Anfield and then secure a loan move to somewhere whose season does not follow the same pattern as European clubs because as FIFA rules explain: “As an exception to this rule [players only being able to feature for two teams], a player moving between two clubs belonging to associations with overlapping seasons (i.e. start of the season in summer/autumn as opposed to winter/spring) may be eligible to play in official matches for a third club during the relevant season, provided he has fully complied with his contractual obligations towards his previous clubs.”

What is the best outcome for Harvey Elliott this January?

Interestingly, Elliott moving to the MLS in 2026 was then rumoured this week.

But Fabrizio Romano has since shared a fresh update on the situation, saying Elliott is not keen.

He wrote: “Harvey Elliott currently not taking into consideration a move to MLS at this stage of his career.

“Charlotte FC to wait and try offer a loan move, but Elliott’s not keen as of today.”

Elliott has played just 97 minutes of Premier League football so far this season.

He has not been included in a league matchday squad since October, and his last appearance in the competition was versus Fulham in September.

A return to Liverpool this month could be possible, but if Slot does not use him either, the 22-year-old would be in the same situation back at Anfield.
