Chelsea are being linked with a move for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers
Villa sit third in the Premier League after a magnificent recent run of form that was ended by a 4-1 loss against Arsenal in North London. They recently claimed a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to move further clear of the Blues in the race for the Champions League.
Rogers has scored seven goals and provided five assists in all competitions for Villa this season and he is not a player they want to sell. However, the club have spending limits due to Profit and Sustainability rules and may have to part with one of their star men.
Premier League clubs voted in November to move away from PSR and toward a of Squad-Cost Rules model, which limit clubs to spending no more than 85% of their football revenue and net profit or loss from transfers.
However, PSR still needs to factored in until the change comes into affect.
Caught Offside report that Villa are under pressure to sell a big name and that could be Rogers as Chelsea circle. A source told the outlet: “It’s an open secret that Rogers is high up on Chelsea’s list.
“And unless something dramatic changes, Villa will be under pressure to sell. This would be a big-money sale that could have a significant impact on their finances.”
However, Villa are in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League which will give their finances a huge boost and make it harder for Chelsea to sign Rogers. The player himself could also be eager to stay put and play Champions League football - with Chelsea currently outside the top four and seeking a new manager after sacking Enzo Maresca.
Speaking about the player after his recent impressive form, Villa boss Unai Emery said: "He's a fantastic guy. He loves football - his commitment with the club is fantastic, his attitude every day. He's a leader in the dressing room because he's always positive, he has energy, and then he has skills, of course.
"His versatility is very important and to be positive playing 10 numbers inside, 10 numbers outside, even like a winger, is very, very important for us. Through the mentality he's showing, he can get his best and adding numbers now - goals, assists."
