Former Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has stunned fans after launching a music career out of the blue. Diaz, who transferred to Bayern Munich last summer, has released a song called 'La Promesa', meaning 'The promise'. The track has been created alongside Juanda Iriarte and Nelsen, leading artists in champeta - an Afro-Colombian music and dance genre originating from the Caribbean coast.
In his debut musical release, the Premier League winner tells the story of his vow to his parents about buying them a house and helping them escape their previous neighbourhood. Diaz ensured his lyrics expressed his gratitude for his football career without any underlying messages.
"Thank you, God, for giving me the blessing of playing football," Diaz sings, including lines such as: "And being able to fulfil the promise I made to my parents. And to my whole family, amen."
As 2025 came to a close, Diaz posted an emotional message to his Instagram followers while unveiling his new single.
He wrote: "I close the year with gratitude. To God, for guiding my every step, giving me strength when things got tough, and never abandoning me.
"To my family, thank you from the bottom of my heart. For always being there, through the sacrifices, the difficult moments and every dream that seemed unattainable.
"None of this would be real without you. Every effort makes sense when you can give back to your loved ones at least a fraction of what they did to help you succeed. This song comes from the bottom of my heart, from the most sincere gratitude for what we have built together."
He added: "This is the result of a long journey of faith, work and love. A journey where God has worked in a great way and where my family has fought with me and for me.
"Everything I am and everything I have is thanks to that. Thank you, God. Thank you, family. Thank you, Nelsen Music and Juanda Iriarte, for believing, accompanying the process and making this project a reality, which is called: 'La Promesa'".
The accompanying music video features Díaz performing at his home whilst clips of goals he has scored for Barranquilla FC, Junior de Barranquilla, Porto, Liverpool and Bayern are interspersed throughout.
Diaz also disclosed what drove him to explore music alongside his football career. He stated: "Music is one of my hobbies and a way of expressing myself from the heart, something I do with great love and respect for the art. This project was born out of passion, from enjoying the process and connecting with you from another place."
The Colombian has flourished in Germany's top flight following his departure from Liverpool. The forward has bagged 13 goals and registered seven assists in 22 outings this season.
The 28-year-old netted 41 goals and supplied 23 assists in 148 matches for the Reds, securing the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups during his tenure on Merseyside.
