The Knicks, playing without Karl-Anthony Towns (illness), got off to a fast start on Friday night before the visiting Atlanta Hawks ran away for a 111-99 victory, leading by as much as 26. Jalen Brunson scored 24 points for New York, with OG Anunoby finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Mikal Bridges adding 18 points. Ariel Hukporti, starting in place of Towns, had 16 rebounds and blocked four shots.
Philadelphia got to 2-2 on its road trip with a 123-108 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night. Tyrese Maxey went for 34 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds, with rookie VJ Edgecombe adding 23 points and Joel Embiid dropping 22. Quentin Grimes came off the bench for 19 points and also blocked three shots.
The 76ers won in their first visit to Madison Square Garden this season, taking a 116-107 decision on Dec. 19. Maxey averages 30.9 points and 7.2 assists for the Sixers, with Embiid putting up 22.6 points per game and Andre Drummond snaring 9.2 rebounds a night. Brunson gets averages of 29.2 points and 6.5 assists to lead New York, with Towns contributing 21.9 points and 11.7 boards per game.
