Newcastle United injury update: Hall, Livramento, Trippier, Botman
Newcastle United transfers: Manchester City’s Oscar Bobb has been linked with a move to St James’ Park as well as Leeds United this month.
Newcastle United could end a three-year wait for a senior January signing this month.
The Magpies haven’t completed a major addition in the winter transfer window since the arrival of Anthony Gordon in January 2023.
But with Newcastle sitting 14th in the Premier League table at the midway point in the season, January reinforcements are an option.
Newcastle United’s January transfer window state of play
Sporting director Ross Wilson and head coach Eddie Howe are open to making signings this window with money there to spend, if needed. But the prospect of a ‘maquee signing’ or significant transfer outlay has been played down by the pair.
Howe claimed the club’s transfer business would be dictated by the status of his Newcastle squad in terms of availability and fitness. Several players have been out injured in recent weeks though the club anticipate the current situation will clear up over the next few weeks with Tino Livramento, Sven Botman, Anthony Elanga, Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn all expected to return.

Departures are possible with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles, William Osula and Joe Willock all attracting interest. Trippier, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth, in addition to Lascelles, are into the final six months of their contracts and will be free to negotiate an exit from the club this month, should they wish.
In terms of incomings, Newcastle are big admirers of AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit but the 19-year-old is likely to be too costly this transfer window, with both the player and Dutch club preferring to assess options in the summer.
Toulouse left-back Dayann Methalie has also been scouted by The Magpies, who are looking to strengthen in the full-back areas in 2026. Any move would bring forward the summer transfer plans this month.
But there’s also another name that has entered the Newcastle transfer rumour mill, and there’s no shortage of interest.
Newcastle United & Leeds United linked with Manchester City man
Bobb has started nine matches for Man City this season, making a further six appearances off the bench. He came off the bench in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over City back in November.
But he as fond memories at St James’ Park, having netted his first and so far only Premier League goal to claim a last-minute 3-2 victory for Man City against The Magpies in January 2024.
Bobb could visit St James’ Park this January regardless with Man City set to face The Magpies in the Carabao Cup semi-final on January 13.
Newcastle signed Anthony Elanga for £55million during the summer transfer window but the 23-year-old has struggled for form and consistency since his arrival, contributing just one assist in 25 appearances in all competitions.
Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes are also options for United on the wing, with Bobb able to play down either flank. Despite that, he won’t be a priority for Newcastle to pursue this month, particularly given the interest from elsewhere.
Bobb is under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2029, BBC Sport have claimed he could opt to leave the club due to the expected signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.
