Report: Liverpool actively watching the best young player in Africa as he takes the Championship by storm

The transfer window is officially open and Liverpool are already keeping close tabs on some exciting players.

The Reds have not had the season they would have liked, but there is still a long way to go and time to put things right.

They are already planning for the future too, with many players being linked with moves in both January and the summer, with it looking like next season could be a big one at Anfield.

Not only do they want some huge names, but Liverpool are keen to keep on signing young stars who will be the future of the club, with a new player being linked.

He is officially the best young player in Africa too, showing just how good a talent he is, but they will face stiff competition for his signature.

Liverpool sent scouts to watch Othmane Maamma

The name Othmane Maamma might not ring a bell for many Liverpool fans right now, but for Watford supporters, they know just how good he really is.

The Moroccan is one of the rising stars of African football, even being voted as the Confederation of African Football’s Young Player of the Year in 2025.

He helped his nation win the U20’s World Cup and was named Player of the Tournament, with the 20-year-old currently at Watford.

But according to TEAMtalk, he might not be there much longer as Liverpool are one of the clubs who have sent scouts to watch him play, alongside both Man United and Newcastle.

He is starting to become a key player under Javi Gracia in the Championship now too, meaning there will be plenty more chances to watch him play, and he might not be too costly either.

He cost just £1m from Montpellier in the summer, meaning Watford will make a hefty profit, although he might still be a bargain given the potential he has.

Liverpool are desperate for a winger, preferably one who can play on both sides of the pitch, and Maamma can do exactly that.

He is a tricky type of player who is very adept at using both feet, with it clear at Watford this season that he is a danger from both flanks.

With this an issue at Anfield so far this season, Maamma might just be the perfect option to bring onto the pitch to make a difference in games, especially if they can get him for cheap.

He might be more of a player for the future, but with uncertainty over the likes of Mohamed Salah, he might just get a bit of time to continue developing first, but it is hard to see him staying in the Championship for too long.
