Alexis Mac Allister has painfully admitted that Liverpool have little chance of retaining their Premier League title. But the midfielder insists there is still plenty to play for this season.
Liverpool head to Fulham today (Sunday, January 4) looking to strengthen their grip on fourth place. However, their hopes of achieving anything greater in the top flight this season look over already. The Reds sit 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, nine behind second-placed Aston Villa, and eight behind Manchester City in third.
And in an interview with Sky Sports, Mac Allister said: "There are not many chances of Liverpool retaining the title. I hate to say it, but it is quite clear. Arsenal is in a really good moment, Manchester City is quite close, but we are not close in terms of performances, or results, so I do not see us becoming champions again.
"It hurts because this should be a moment when we are enjoying the Premier League, which we won and we should be in a much better place than we are.
"So it hurts, many things have changed from last season and it is not ideal, but that is the situation we are in and we have to face it and keep working to get better."
Asked why the Reds have struggled, Mac Allister responded: "Many things changed as I said, new players came in to replace those who left, we changed too many things, but I prefer to keep it to myself."
After facing Fulham this afternoon, Liverpool head to table-topping Arsenal on Thursday before kicking-off their FA Cup campaign at home to Barnsley on Monday week.
In a busy January programme, the Reds also take on Marseille and Qarabag in the Champions League as they look to progress automatically to the knockout phase.
And Mac Allister said: "It is quite clear we have amazing players, it is just about becoming a team, that is what we need. Personally, without the team I am nothing and I feel like we all need to get better and think about the guy next to me, become a better team and that will help us and raise our level.
"For me it is quite clear but in terms of goals, the Champions League is there and we will definitely fight for that one because it would be a very nice one. And the FA Cup, which is a really important cup for English teams.
"We are still there, we are going to play soon and that is another goal for us. When you play for Liverpool, you always have to fight for everything."
The Reds have not been helped by injuries so far this season with two of their nine first-team summer signings suffering serious setbacks.
The defending champions Premier League champions broke the British transfer record to sign Alexander Isak for £125m from Newcastle United.
But the striker is now facing months on the sidelines after breaking his leg when scoring Liverpool's second goal in their 2-1 triumph at Tottenham Hotspur.
And Mac Allister said: "We all know how good he is on the pitch, he is a really good guy as well and was really unlucky with the injury after the goal he scored.
"But we are pretty sure Alex will be back soon at his best as we can all see his quality and how good of a guy he is. He is going to be okay."
