Mohamed Salah has sent a double message as the Liverpool star continues to enjoy the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt. The 33-year-old left the Reds last month to link up with his country for the tournament, which is taking place in Morocco.
Salah helped Egypt reach the knockout stages of the tournament, scoring the winning goals in their group stage victories over Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Liverpool star was absent from Egypt’s last group stage match against Angola due to his country already progressing to the last 16, and Salah will now be hoping to play a key role in their match against Benin on Monday.
Ahead of Egypt’s next match, Salah has posted two photos on his Instagram story of himself smiling during his country’s latest training session.
Salah’s future at Liverpool was the subject of intense speculation before he left Merseyside to link up with the Egypt squad. The forward was dropped from the matchday squad for the Champions League win over Inter Milan following comments he made in an interview after the 3-3 draw with Leeds United.
Salah was subsequently named in Liverpool’s matchday squad for their Premier League win over Brighton, where he made a cameo appearance from the bench in what was his last appearance for the club before taking part in AFCON.
Reports in recent days have speculated about Salah’s future at Liverpool with the January transfer window now officially open. There have even been reports in Italy that have claimed that Salah’s former club Roma could have an interest in re-signing the forward.
Salah remains contracted at Liverpool until 2027, but with his future still up in the air, Jamie Carragher recently pondered what may happen in the weeks and months ahead.
"Will Mohamed Salah still be at Liverpool on February 1, 2026, or September 1, 2026? Yes, and no," Carragher wrote in The Telegraph.
"Given Liverpool’s injury situation following Alexander Isak’s broken leg, the club cannot afford to allow Salah to leave in the January transfer window.
"After the bust-up earlier this season, the Africa Cup of Nations has come at a good time for everyone to take a breath. The next few months could turn into a long goodbye for Salah, however.
"The current Liverpool era will be forever synonymous with Salah. He is one of the all-time greats of Liverpool and the Premier League, so an emotional farewell at the final game of this season would be the perfect, choreographed send-off."
