Liverpool Had Scouts Watching U20 World Cup Golden Ball Winner This Week - Report

Liverpool sent scouts to watch Watford winger Othmane Maamma on New Year’s Day, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim the Reds had representatives in the stands as the Hornets secured a comfortable win over Birmingham City.

Former Liverpool player Tom Ince stole the show at Vicarage Road with a hat-trick but Maamma also impressed whilst playing on the opposite flank.

It is believed that three Premier League sides had observers present, with Manchester United and Newcastle joining the Merseysiders in keeping tabs on the young Moroccan.

What do fans need to know about Maamma?

The 20-year-old came through Montpellier’s academy and he had just broken into the French club’s first team before making the £1m switch to Watford last summer.

Maamma gained wider recognition while playing for his national team. He was given the Golden Ball (which is awarded to the best player) at the Under-20 World Cup back in October.

The winger played an instrumental role in helping Morocco win the tournament, scoring the opener in a 2-1 win over Brazil, as well as providing 4 assists, including one in the final against Argentina.

In addition to the three teams already mentioned, Maamma has also caught the attention of Brighton, Sunderland and Brentford.

Could Liverpool sign him in January?

Watford are currently in the midst of a promotion push under head coach Javi Gracia, and TEAMtalk claim the Championship side would be reluctant to let Maamma leave midway through the season.

However, the Hornets would still find it difficult to reject an offer if it is significantly above the fee they paid for the Moroccan youth international back in July.

Liverpool do lack depth on the wings, and Maamma is a very promising young player, so it is one to keep a close eye on.
