Liverpool defensive move ruled out

Liverpool’s defensive issues have been raised on numerous occasions this season.

26 goals have been conceded so far by Arne Slot’s side, and it is an issue that continues to disrupt the team from building any real sort of rhythm and consistency.

Of course, this was an area of potential concern that Liverpool desperately tried to fix in the summer, but even they couldn’t have predicted the rotten luck they’ve had since that window slammed shut.

The single defensive reinforcement signed this summer arrived in the form of talented Italian Giovanni Leoni, who went on to disastrously tear his ACL on his Liverpool debut.

That injury has put him out for the season, but he remains upbeat about the whole process.

A deal for Marc Guehi collapsed on deadline day, and with Virgil van Dijk turning 35 this year and Ibrahima Konate continuing to stall over a contract extension, the future of Liverpool’s backline appears uncertain.

There were recent reports from Ecuador that Liverpool were on the verge of signing Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez.

Simon Jones for the Daily Mail has put an end to that transfer sage, stating:

“The 21-year-old Ecuador international has been linked with a big money move to Anfield but a deal is not on the agenda for Liverpool’s hierarchy as it stands.”

“Ordonez has been watched by Liverpool scouts over recent seasons, but they are looking at other options in the market.”

“They remain in the running for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, along with Manchester City, but for the summer.”

Liverpool will explore the January transfer market, but it remains to be seen if they will choose to pursue any deals at this stage.
