Florian Wirtz initially saw his goal ruled out for offside before a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention gave Liverpool the equaliser. The German guided his shot into the corner, only for the assistant referee to raise the offside flag immediately.

Replays showed how tight the call was, making it hard to predict which way the offside decision would fall. After a lengthy VAR review, however, Wirtz's goal was eventually awarded, awarding Arne Slot's side the equaliser.

A statement from the Premier League Match Centre, explained: 57’ VAR OVERTURN VAR checked the referee's call of no goal – and established that Wirtz was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded." It was Wirtz's second goal in the Premier League after scoring against Wolves.

This was the second time VAR has intervened in the game for both goals.

Harry Wilson's opener was first chalked off for offside, prompting VAR to step in.

He had burst past Ryan Gravenberch and fired low across Alisson Becker into the far corner. But replays later indicated that Wilson was almost level with Virgil van Dijk, the final defender.

The match at Craven Cottage was delayed, eventually starting at 3:15pm due to a medical emergency at the stadium. An announcement over the tannoy confirmed the delay.

By that point, the players had finished their warm‑ups and headed back inside.

Liverpool are looking to bounce back from the goalless draw against Leeds United before facing leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.
