VJ Edgecombe is becoming a sharpshooter in Philly
Rookie sensation VJ Edgecombe has been a human highlight reel in his debut season with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Edgecombe, who was taken third overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, entered the league with immense potential, as scouts raved about his athleticism and scoring upside.
His only major blemish was his streaky shooting, with many predicting that the former Baylor standout would be a subpar shooter at the pro level.
So far, that assessment couldn’t be further from the truth.
Edgecome, 20, is averaging 16.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists through 29 games. Impressively, the Sixers rookie is shooting 38 percent from deep. His 65 three-pointers made are second among all rookies.
“He’s been awesome,” said Sixers head coach Nick Nurse. “I think just, again, the composure. I think that he has it just so steady out there. He plays like a 10-year vet with his composure.”
Although rim-rocking dunks and emphatic blocks have led to several viral moments for Edgecome, his consistency from deep has been a pleasant surprise for Philly.
During the Sixers’ victory on Saturday over the New York Knicks, Edgecombe erupted for 26 points, two steals and two blocks while shooting 4-for-9 from deep.
Over his last ten games, the Rookie of the Year candidate is splashing 40 percent of his three-point attempts. Edgecombe is averaging 20.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists over that span.
“He’s cold,” Tyrese Maxey said of his rookie teammate. “I don’t want to say cocky, but it’s a good cocky.”

When the Sixers selected Edgecombe third overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, they knew they were getting a uber athletic guard with two-way potential.
Many figured his rookie role would largely consist of being an effective slasher and pesky defender in Philly.
Edgecombe has delivered on that promise, already amassing an impressive dunk highlight reel while leading all rookies in steals per game (1.4).
However, he has also been an effective long-range shooter, making him a potent scoring threat in Philly.
When discussing the impact Edgecombe had made in Philly, Tyrese Maxey hilariously expressed gratitude for the Sixers drafting the Bahamian guard.
“We’re blessed to have him,” Maxey told reporters on New Year’s Day. “Super. Thank you, basketball gods, Lord, Baylor, I don’t know. Daryl Morey. Everybody.”
Over his last ten games, Edgecombe has scored 20+ points in all but three contests, while shooting 47 percent over that span. Additionally, the talented rookie has helped anchor the Sixers’ defense, providing Philly with valuable two-way ability.

His superstar potential is evident, but Maxey is unwilling to put a cap on his potential.
“He’s 20. Let him figure it out,” Maxey added. “I’m not gonna put a cap on him. People tried to put a cap on me and now we’re here. So, who knows? It’s up to him. How much does he want to work? Who does he want to become?”
With his biggest collegiate flaw looking like a major asset at the pro level, the sky is the limit for Edgecombe.
He’s already drawn high praise from basketball legends Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Paul George, and could continue to turn heads in his impressive debut season.
