Liverpool under Arne Slot perfectly summed up by Jamie Carragher with just one word - opinion

Liverpool were aiming to put an end to a poor string of performances when they travelled to Fulham on Sunday.

It was a really slow start from the Reds, which included a big miss from Cody Gakpo.

Harry Wilson then scored against his former team to give Fulham the advantage at half-time.

Arne Slot’s men began the second half with much more intensity and were rewarded shortly before the 60th minute when Florian Wirtz’s effort was eventually given by VAR after a long check.

But Liverpool faded as the game wore on, however, settling for a point to keep their unbeaten run going.

Jamie Carragher verdict on Liverpool vs Fulham

As has become a pretty common theme in the last several weeks, though, the main criticism aimed at the team is not the results, it’s the football.

Yes, a decent unbeaten run is by no means bad, but some of the football being played, particularly in the final third, is frustrating to watch.

Jamie Carragher summed it up perfectly when acting as a pundit for Sky Sports during Sunday’s fixture.

He said: “It has to be a lot better. It’s been boring. No real threat, it just needs to be quicker, it does.

“I think Liverpool have got a lot of players in the team who actually want to play the same time of football, five-a-side football I call it, lots of short passes, not really hurting anybody at all.”

Carragher’s claim that Liverpool were ‘boring’ is spot-on, and he’s right that they have too many players who like to play shorter passes, rather than opening up teams.

The solution to this does seem pretty clear, however. The Reds need to sign a more creative midfielder in 2026.

Who that would be and whether it would come in January remains to be seen, but Liverpool need to change something if they wish to start creating more going forward.

Adam Wharton has been mooted in recent days, but it’s thought Crystal Palace want to keep the midfielder until 2027.
