Kerkez proved Carragher wrong vs Fulham after bizarre comparison to former Liverpool star - opinion

Milos Kerkez was brought back into the Liverpool team against Fulham and put in a good shift.

The Reds came away from Craven Cottage with a point on Sunday evening, but it could have been more, although it equally could have been less.

The game really could have gone either way and Liverpool were far from convincing, although one player who can hold his head up a little higher than most is Kerkez.

The left-back did a decent job for his side and was steady throughout, with this needed due to the criticism he has faced since joining in the summer.

Jamie Carragher specifically was harsh on the Hungarian before the game and made a bizarre comparison to a former Reds star, although Kerkez proved him so wrong.

A lot has been said about Kerkez since joining Liverpool as he has been nowhere near the levels he was at when playing for Bournemouth.

However, he has slowly settled in and got better with many fans recognising this, although Carragher still has not been pleased.

He even made a bizarre comparison between Kerkez and former Red Darwin Nunez, with the ex-Liverpool defender saying both were erratic.

“It’s funny watching him [Kerkez] play. I always remember speaking about Trent Alexander-Arnold, who Liverpool have missed enormously of course, and said it’s like having Kevin De Bruyne at right-back,” he said before the game on Sky Sports.

“Sometimes when you watch Kerkez, it’s like having Darwin Nunez at left-back, it’s just a bit mad.

“There’s no real thought process, what’s he doing with the ball, how’s he connecting with other players, it’s just head down, run. He never gets his head up and actually plays passes.

“He’s got to improve, he’s a young man, we’ve seen that with a few left-backs, Andy Robertson being one actually who didn’t have the greatest start to his Liverpool career, but he needs to improve.”

Despite Carragher’s opinion perhaps being true when he first arrived, Kerkez has shown that it is no longer true.

He has been a lot calmer week after week, and while everything was going badly at Fulham, he kept a level head and did his job well.

He stuck to his task, defended well and tried to get forward where he could, with the Hungarian by far not the worst player on the pitch.

If anything, he was one of the more steady ones and has proved Carragher wrong, with this something he can hopefully keep up while those around him find their feet again.
