Jamie Carragher has admitted he thinks Florian Wirtz’s equalizer against Fulham on Sunday was offside as controversy surrounds the German international’s goal.
Wirtz struck in the second half after Harry Wilson had given the hosts the lead at Craven Cottage, although it needed a VAR intervention to get Liverpool back level.
The Reds thought they had won the game when Cody Gakpo struck deep into stoppage time, but Harrison Reed produced an incredible strike moments later to earn his side a draw, and leave Liverpool waiting for its first win of 2026, having also drawn with Leeds a few days earlier.

There are plenty of questions surrounding the way in which the visitors drew themselves level. Wirtz’s goal was initially ruled out for offside, only for referee Craig Pawson to be instructed to overturn the decision after a lengthy VAR review.
Replays though seemed to show that Wirtz was indeed offside, with his right foot looking to have strayed beyond the last defender as Conor Bradley played his pass into him.
Carragher summed up the feeling surrounding the strike, with even the Liverpool legend confused as to how the goal was given.

Summing up the Reds’ performance on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “The second half was better. It couldn't be any worse, really. The first half was so pedestrian, and there was more intensity.
“Wirtz gets his goal. He looks offside to me. When you have the lines and the penalty spot, he definitely looks further forward.
“I know the camera angles can fool you sometimes, but I just can't believe it has been given.”
Wirtz himself has admitted he thought he was standing in an offside position, while Fulham boss Marco Silva claimed the goal was a “clear offside”.

Despite seemingly getting a slice of good fortune, Liverpool wasn’t able to pick up its first win of the New Year, with Arne Slot’s frustration clear ahead of a big game against Arsenal coming up on Thursday.
"If it would have finished 1-1, then I would maybe still have been disappointed... but you are 2-1 up in extra time, and then you concede a goal, and it leads to 2-2," Slot told the BBC's Match of the Day. "We are disappointed with the outcome."
The Liverpool boss added: "Once in a while, the boys should get a reward, but we do not get it, and once again, the only one to blame is ourselves."
