Fulham scored a 97th-minute equaliser to earn a 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League.

Marco Silva insisted that it would have been ‘completely unfair’ had Fulham suffered defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

The Craven Cottage encounter was one of few goalscoring opportunities for both teams. Gakpo spurned a big chance before Harry Wilson netted Fulham’s first sight on goal in the 17th minute, with his strike given following a lengthy VAR review for offside.

Liverpool hit the crossbar early in the second half before Florian Wirtz levelled - another goal that was initially given offside before VAR intervened. While Wilson struck the woodwork for Fulham before Gakpo bundled home at the back post, which sparked some of the home faithful to start heading for the turnstiles, the home side were not finished. From 35 yards, Reed cracked an unstoppable effort that picked out he top corner.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot suggested that his side had enough chances to win the game. But Fulham counterpart Silva reckons a share of the spoils was the correct results. Cottagers head coach Silva said: “If we happened to lose that game, then it would have been completely unfair for us. Looking at everything throughout the game, 2-1 would have been completely unfair for us.

“Our first goal was a brilliant one. The combinations, the opposite runs from Harry and Raúl (Jiménez) were top level, and what a finish from Harry again. Every time he touches the ball now, he’s capable of doing something magical for us – and he did it again.

“The first half was good for us in terms of organisation, not many chances for Liverpool. We broke up everything and to be leading the score at half-time was completely deserved for us.

“After the equaliser, Liverpool were better and it boosted their confidence. They pushed us more back and made it difficult for us, but we reacted well again and showed composure. One of the biggest chances was Harry Wilson at 1-1 off the crossbar. In the end, it’s a fair result because it was not a game for us to lose at all.”
